In four weeks, on Wednesday, February 14th, the season of Lent begins. Lent is a 40-day period of fasting and preparation for Easter. It has been observed by Christ followers for hundreds of years.
What is 40 Bags in 40 Days?
More recently, the 40 Bags in 40 Days Challenge has made its way across social media to encourage decluttering in your life. (Check out #40Bagsin40Days on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.) 40 Bags in 40 Days is a 40-day period, coinciding with the 40 days of Lent, where you declutter one area a day – a closet, a bedroom, the trunk of your car. The goal is one bag a day.
A quick search of Google yields dozens of blog posts, Pinterest boards, and resources to aid in the challenge. Moreover, social media has added accountability to the task as well as encouragement.
Taking On the Challenge Together
Many local churches across the greater Tennessee area observe Lent. And Knox Area Rescue Ministries & KARM Stores have the privilege of partnering with many of them. In the spirit of the season, why not undertake the 40 Bags in 40 Days Challenge together? Talk about this opportunity with your family, your friends, your small group or Sunday School class, and your entire church. Decide together to pull out the clutter that has accumulated in your lives.
Giving Purpose to Your Clutter
If the personal benefits of this novel fasting exercise are not enough, consider how your clutter can help others. Every donation of gently-used items to KARM Stores is put to work helping the poor & homeless in our community. The donations provide direct assistance for guests at Knox Area Rescue Ministries, be it a coat, shirt or pants. Or through 100% of profits from the sale of the items, which pay for meals, shelter and programs to get guests back on their feet.
So declutter your life on purpose and then donate those items for a purpose.
